You may have a lot of questions such as, will it be similar my other doctors’ visits? Do I need to know what Ayurveda is? The answer to your questions is no. Then what should you expect?

You don’t have to be sick to benefit from a private Ayurvedic consultation. You can have an Ayurvedic consultation simply to know better about yourself.

An Ayurvedic doctor can help you understand your Ayurvedic constitution (dosha), which may always be helpful in many cases.

In times of illness, an individual consultation can give you a new point of view on your condition and help you work with your symptoms for better results.

Now that you are ready to take a plunge into this holistic approach, it’s time to divulge into the things that you can look forward to in your initial Ayurvedic consultation.

What to expect?

When getting your initial consultation, be prepared to spend about half an hour to one hour with the practitioner. Ayurvedic consultation involves a thorough examination of your body through which the consultant really gets to know you. It consists of examining important areas of the body and their functioning, which reveals the balances and imbalances in your body.

These consultations address a person’s health concerns from a physical, emotional and spiritual perspective. Integrating the theoretical frameworks of Ayurveda and modern science, these sessions focus as much on the person who is facing a health challenge as the health challenge being faced.

During a typical evaluation, the Ayurvedic Consultant takes a complete medical and lifestyle history and performs a physical evaluation that looks at the body both as a physical system as well as a field of intelligence, reflecting the needs and choices of a person’s life.

Physician may observe your General Appearance, you may have to stick out your tongue, she may check your pulse, you may have to answer personal questions like, your Appetite, Sleep patterns, Behavioral traits, Temperament, Bowel habits etc.

Based upon this assessment, a personalized body/mind/spirit health-enhancing prescription is formulated, including recommendations on diet, stress management, exercise, emotional healing, nutritional and herbal supplements, and sensory modulation.

An important goal of Ayurveda is to identify a person’s prakriti ideal state of balance, determine patterns of imbalance (vikriti), and offer interventions using suitable diet, herbs, pancha-karma, massage treatments, yoga and meditation to reestablish the inner balance.

Now that you know a few things on what to expect on your first Ayurveda consultation, get on with your first visit or start scheduling one!

Shirodhara Ultimate Tranquility

Shirodhara is an amazing, unique body therapy from the ancient natural medical system Ayurveda. Shirodhara has a profound impact on the nervous system. That means, the treatment directly and immediately calms, relaxes and has a cleansing effect on the mind and nerves. Shirodhara is the ultimate relaxation therapy everyone should enjoy. Not only does it bring you to a state of deep relaxation, it has tremendous healing benefits as well. Curing ailments from insomnia, to hypertension to depression, this natural Ayurvedic therapy has a lot to offer.

What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is performed by pouring warm herbal medicated oil in a continuous flow over the forehead for a length of 30 -40 minutes. Warm oil (or other liquid) pours in a continuous stream over the forehead or ‘ajna marma’, an area where nerves are highly concentrated. The pressure of the oil onto the forehead creates a vibration. The oil saturates the forehead and scalp and penetrates into the nervous system. he gentle pressure and soothing warmth of the oil allow the body, mind and nervous system to experience a deep state of rest, similar to meditation.

From this seemingly simple therapy, the results are astounding. First and foremost, it causes a decrease in blood pressure, leading to decreased activity in the central nervous system, resulting in tranquility of mind. The experience is of passive meditation, where all mental activity is cleansed away and you naturally drop into a deep state of centered awareness. From this state of pure consciousness, your entire physiology is relaxed and the potential for healing diseases of the body and mind are realized.

Who Benefits from Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is a great treatment for a compromised nervous system. Shirodhara can help relieve symptoms of anxiety, stress, fatigue and hypertension

Shirodhara is known to heal conditions such as insomnia, anxiety, stress, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, headache, asthma, high cholesterol, hypertension, asthma, eczema, psoriasis, ulcers, enlarged prostate, hair loss, hearing loss, eye problems, epilepsy, nervous system disorders and rheumatism. Shirodhara is also known to stimulate your pineal and pituitary gland, which naturally brings your hormones back into balance.

It regulates mood and gives feelings of pleasure and relaxation. Shirodhara treatment is advised for the prevention of many psychosomatic disorders. In a healthy individual, prevention of diseases pertaining to the body, mind and sense organs is the foremost indication.

How Does Shirodhara Work?

According to Ayurveda, shirodhara is beneficial for Vata and Pitta dosha. When out of balance, Vata dosha exhibits as fear, insecurity, worry, racing thoughts. Out of balance Pitta dosha exhibits as anger, irritability, frustration, judgment.

The gentle pressure of the oil falling onto the forehead may also play a role in inducing rest. In the procedure of Shirodhara, particular pressure and vibration is created over the forehead. This vibration along with little temperature may activate the functions of thalamus and the basal fore brain which then brings the amount of serotonin and catecholamine to the normal stage inducing the sleep.

Again, it is explained in modern text books of physiology that pressure has an effect on impulse conduction through tactile and thermo receptors. If prolonged pressure is applied to a nerve, impulse conduction in interrupted and part of the body may go to rest. In Dhara therapy, prolonged and continuous pressure due to pouring of the medicated liquid may cause tranquility of mind and induce natural sleep.

Combining the blissful, tranquilizing effect Shirodhara has on the mind, with the vast health benefits it offers the body, it is easy to conclude that this natural Ayurvedic therapy can benefit virtually everyone in today’s modern world.

If you have a loved one that would benefit from this treatment, KAC would like to offer this treatment to your friends and family.

Paralysis is the complete loss of muscle function in an affected limb or muscle group.

WHAT HAPPENS?

  • The chain of nerve cells that runs from the brain through the spinal cord out to the muscle is called the motor pathway.
  • Normal muscle function requires intact connections all along this motor pathway.
  • Damage at any point reduces the brain’s ability to control the muscle movements.
  • This reduced efficiency causes weakness also called paresis. Complete loss of communication prevents any willed movements at all.

This lack of control is called paralysis.

CAUSES :

  • Damage in the brain or spinal cord (UMN lesion) or
  • Damage to the nerves outside the spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system (LMN lesion).
  • Stroke, trauma with the nerve injury, poliomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, tumor, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy etc.

PRESENTATION:

The degree and extend of neurological deficit depend upon the location and extension of damage to the brain calls or nervous system.  e.g. Monoplegia: Affecting only one limb, Diplegia Affecting the same body region on both side of the body, Hemiplegia: Affecting one side of the body, Paraplegia: Affecting both legs and trunk and Quadriplegia: Affecting all four limbs and the trunk

In certain cases, along with motor deficits, disturbance of speech (aphasia or dysarthria), loss of higher mental functions, numbness, tingling, pain, problems with balance and changes in vision are also observed. Spinal cord injury often causes loss of function in the bladder, bowel and sexual organs.

Beat The Summer Heat by Ayurvedic lifestyle

Introduction

Ayurveda, the age old science of life, emphasizes that one must engage in maintenance of good health and prevention of diseases by following proper diet & lifestyle regimen rather than be inflicted with disease and engaging in its cure. These aspects are elaborated in Ayurvedic Classics, while explaining the importance of Dinacharya (daily regimen) & Ritucharya (seasonal regimen). Every Ritu, (season) is characterized by special features that bring about unique effects on the body as well as the environment. Ayurveda has depicted various rules and regimens (Charya), regarding diet and behavior to acclimatize seasonal enforcement easily, without altering body homeostasis. Lifestyle disorders are very common in the present era, basically originating from lack of following seasonal regimens due to lack of concentration on seasonal characteristics.

What Happens in the Summer Months ?

During Greeshma Ritu, the Kapha in the body begins to melt, and the Pitta gets aggravated. The dryness and lightness in the weather also gives rise to excessive Vata. Hence, the transformational power of Pitta is affected during the Summers, leading to poor digestion and causing acidity, constipation, stomach ulcers and diarrhea. Meanwhile, the Vata aggravation causes fatigue and lethargy.

What must we do?

Due to the imbalance of the dosas in summers, most of us need to balance pitta regardless of our constitution. Our digestive fire is naturally low during hot weather, and we often experience a decrease in appetite.

  • Respect this change in season by eating in moderation.
  •  Avoid drinking ice cold juices & ice-creams during or immediately after meals as it would impact the Pitta and reduce digestive powers of your body.
  •  Drink plenty of water throughout the day, as it helps in flushing out all the toxic matter from the body.
  • Include ample of fruits and vegetables in your regular diet. Eat fruits like watermelon, peaches, plums, mangoes, grapes, pears, avocado and berries are good to beat summer heat. Use vegetables like – Asparagus, cucumber, cabbage, sweet potato, celery, green leafy vegetables.
  • Avoid food that is greasy, oily, and fried. The food that contains lot of spices and pungent taste should be kept away. Do not consume stale or leftover food, as they contain harmful bacteria. Eat fresh food that is cooked just an hour before.
  • Cut down the intake of coffee, tea, or carbonated drinks. Minimize the consumption of alcohol during summers. Carbonated drink contains acids that make your more dehydrated. Rather consume buttermilk, fruit juices, coconut water and traditional drinks- sherbet prepared from Indian gooseberry, kokum, and raw mangoes. You may also enjoy herbal tea like Mint tea, which provides amazing relaxation and stamina.

Ayurvedic Therapies during Summer Months

Abhyangam with medicated oils that have cooling properties followed by mild fomentation is recommended, this will nourish skin and will reduce the effects of high temperature on body.

Treatments like Shirodhara will give relaxing effect. In this season Shirodhara can be done with decoctions which have cooling properties this will calm the mind and irritability caused by increased temperature.

In this season eyes also become dry and fatigued due dryness in environment and bright, intensive light rays so Netra Dhara with decoctions helps a lot to rejuvenate eyes. Ayurvedic treatments such as Coolant body wraps, Takradhara, Shirolepa, Ksheerdhara etc. are highly recommended for optimal health this season
